Cell Treatment
Cells—more particularly, stem cells—can also be used as a treatment for disease or injury. Stem cell treatment is a kind of intervention treatment, which introduces “new” cells into the patient’s damaged tissues in order to address a problem presented by the effects of disease or injury. There are a wide variety of stem cell therapies and treatments that exist today, but many of them are undergoing experimental stages or are very costly. Bone marrow transplantation is a notable stem cell treatment that is not as costly and is remarkably commonplace.
Medical researchers believe that by using stem cells in treatments and therapies, they will be able to explore the potential of a “tool” to “change the face of human disease and alleviate suffering.” Stem cells are selected for this task because they have the ability to self-renew, therefore raising the amount of cell population in a specifically targeted area. This type of cells is also known to possess the potential to generate tissues that can eventually “replace diseased and damaged areas in the body, with minimal risk of rejection and side effects.”
Researchers hope that adult and embryonic stem cells will soon help medical professionals to treat afflictions such Type 1 Diabetes mellitus, various types of cancer, Parkinson’s disease, Celiac disease, Huntington’s disease, cardiac problems, damage to the muscles, neurological disorders and conditions, and much more. However, perfecting stem cell procedures and harnessing the cells’ full potential may be a little far into the future, mostly because more research to understand stem cell behavior and the effects of transplantation is required before it can be successfully applied in the clinical setting. Also, medical researchers still need to observe the “mechanics of stem cell interaction with the diseased or injured microenvironment,” which will eventually be a patient’s body.
