Tissue Cells
A tissue is a group of cells performing the same specific and specialized function. It is a cellular organizational level right between cells (the most basic) and a complete organism (the most complicated). Tissues are ensembles of cells—not all of them should be identical in morphology or structure, but they should be of the same origin. When grouped together, the cells forming a tissue carry out a specific function, and tissues are called as such because of their identical functioning. When multiple tissues are functionally grouped together, organs are formed.
The study of tissues is called histology, and when the study focuses on the connection of tissues with disease, it is called histopathology. A person studying tissues typically uses a paraffin block, where the tissue is embedded in and then sectioned. However, technological advancements in immunofluorescence, electron microscopy, and the freezing of tissues, have enabled scientists to study tissues a whole lot better. Scientists and medical professionals are also able to observe the tissues in enhanced detail and can be used to refine clinical diagnosis and prognosis.
There are four main types of animal tissues, and these are: connective (fibrous tissues that give shape to the organs, as well as blood and bone tissues), muscle (produces force, causes motion, and locomotion or movement within the internal organs), epithelial (tissues that cover organ surfaces as found in the skin, the airways, the reproductive and digestive tracts), and nervous tissues (found in the central and peripheral nervous system). On the other hand, plant species also have tissues, which are: epidermis (found on the outer surface of the leaves), vascular (functions as the internal transportation for fluids and nutrients), ground (manufactures nutrients through photosynthesis and stores reserve nutrients), meristematic (actively dividing cells that contribute to the growth and thickening of the plant), and simple permanent, and complex permanent tissues.
